The Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakesh is to be substantially revised in time for its round of the WTCC in 2016. Re-designed by Tilke GmbH the track will be 3km in length, 1.6km shorter than the pure street circuit used in 2015.
The new FIA Grade 2 layout is described as 'semi-permanent' and uses a short section of purpose built track running through what is now the paddock. It will now run in an anti-clockwise direction but retains the same pit complex. One aim of the new layout is to offer local amatuers a new venue to race on year round in an effort to boost the sport locally.
According to event promoter Aly Horma, “the motivation came first and foremost from wanting to upgrade the track to give the public more show, while at the same time ensuring less risk to the teams and hotels all along the track. The local government supported the initiative from the very beginning.”
Marrakech has hosted the WTCC since 2009 and in 2016 the French GT Tour package will also visit the facility.
